An air-to-water heat pump is able to extract heat from the ambient air even at low temperatures of up to minus 20 degrees Celsius.
This is because even at this temperature the refrigerant used evaporates.
One Air-to-water heat pump It uses ambient air as a heat source to heat an entire building. During operation, a built-in fan actively draws in air and directs it to a heat exchanger, the evaporator. A refrigerant circulates within this evaporator, which, due to its thermal properties, changes its state of matter even at low temperatures. When it comes into contact with the incoming warm outside air, it heats up until it begins to evaporate. Since the temperature of the resulting vapor is still relatively low, it flows to an electrically driven compressor. This increases the pressure, which also raises the temperature. Once the refrigerant vapor has reached the desired temperature, it flows to the next heat exchanger, the condenser. Here, it transfers its heat to the heating system and condenses.
The heat recovered in this way can be used for heating or hot water preparation. Before the cooled refrigerant can be reheated and compressed, it first flows through an expansion valve. This reduces the pressure and temperature to their initial levels, allowing the cycle to be repeated.
